Hurricane Beryl was only a category 1 hurricane, but it knocked out power to millions of people in Houston very quickly. We lost our electricity on Monday morning. Usually our power doesn't go out, and if it does, it's not for more than an hour or two. So we waited in vain for it to return and finally pulled out the generator. Ben taught the boys and me how to get it going.
The generator ran the fridge, the WiFi, two fans, and lots of extension cords. The first day without power wasn't so bad because it didn't get above 80. The next few days were much hotter, and without the AC, we were pretty miserable.
The Jones cousins were out of town, except Grant who visited every day. When everyone got back on Wednesday, the first thing they did was pull out a board game and start playing.
On Thursday, after another sticky, sleepless night we decided to escape to Austin to stay with Uncle Nyron. It was a good decision. The power didn't come back until late on Friday.
One of our neighbors had a tree fall on their cars. Fallen trees were a common sight on the way out of town.
Ben's office in Houston was closed, so he got to do some work from Uncle's house in Liberty Hill. Aunty Mala wasn't there since she was driving with Shanti to North Carolina. We got to see Dhar for one day, and then he had to go to his college for soccer camp.
The kids and I went to Georgetown on Friday to enjoy Blue Hole Park. It has a great river to play and swim in. We enjoyed Aunty's pool too.
Savitri was in her happy place with a book and a dog.
We got back home yesterday evening to get things cleaned up and to buy a few groceries before the Sabbath. Our church building didn't have power, so we met at another one close by. There's a lot of cleaning up to do around the neighborhood and elsewhere, so we try to help do that this week. We were very blessed to still have an in-tact fence and no house damage.
