Texas hit record low temperatures this last week and the state was not ready for it. Power outages, burst pipes, and icy roads brought things to a slippery halt. We were prepared with food and water storage and were lucky that we didn't lose our power for very long, so we didn't freeze. The grocery stores have been shopped out and the gas pumps have been emptied, but so far all we have seen is neighborly help, patience with others, and kindness to strangers. I'm proud of Texas.
There's going to be lots of cleanup to do to help friends and neighbors with their flooded houses and other repairs. It's a good time to be a plumber here. We are grateful we haven't been affected much and are able to help others.
We kept the thermostat down low since there wasn't much power to go around, so it was chilly inside. School was cancelled all week, so the kids planted themselves on the couch with blankets and video game controllers and had to be coaxed repeatedly to do anything. Savitri, who is our little polar bear, played outside a few times and found some great icicles.
Everything is thawing now, and it will be an interesting week ahead trying to find groceries, gas, and assessing the damage.
